Fail-safe optimum cable system under cable breakage in cable-stayed bridges. Application to the Queensferry Crossing Bridge

This paper presents a methodology to optimize the cable system in cable-stayed bridges, whose main novelty is take into account accidental breakage of one within design process. To this end, multi-model optimization strategy proposed by establishing constraints on both intact and damaged models. The dynamic effect accounted for models application impact loads at tower deck anchorages. objective function minimize steel volume varying anchor positions deck, number cables, cross sectional areas prestressing forces. approach applied Queensferry Crossing Bridge, longest three-tower bridge world also largest with crossing cables central spans. fail-safe leads different layout than optimum without considering breakage, more smaller areas, having minimum penalty volume.
